Own Your Personal Health Journey
You've heard or seen me mention your personal health journey a lot around here, but do you really know what I mean when I say it?
Health is not a destination. You don't work really hard for a few weeks, months or years and then all of sudden you've arrived, you're healthy! We all know it does not work like that. Health is a journey- it's your personal journey. It's the little decisions you make everyday that accumulate. No one is responsible for your heath but you.
Let me repeat that: NO ONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR HEALTH BUT YOU. Yes, you have a doctor, massage therapist, chiropractor, physical therapist, personal trainer, and others that make up your health team, but we are supporting you in your efforts of living a healthy life at home. We provide our services for you, but we cannot make you eat healthy, exercise, listen to your body, and make healthy choices day in and day out. You are the only person who can decide to do these things.
Personal responsibility in life seems to be lacking for so many of us. We want to place blame on others for what isn't right in our lives because it's easier than looking inward and figuring out that we have the ability to change our lives.
When people come to see me for massage, I explain that even if I were to touch your body everyday for years, you would still know your body better than I ever could. Sure, I'll know where you hold your tension regularly or that a specific technique works better with you than on someone else, but ultimately I cannot feel what you feel inside. This is why I encourage and welcome feedback from our sessions. You are an active participant in our massages together, it's not just me giving you a massage.
I am not a healer, or a miracle worker, although some of you may argue that. I believe in the body's innate ability to heal itself when you take the time to listen to it and respond with what it's telling you it needs. Massage gives you the space to listen to your body, to become aware of what it's trying to tell you. Yes it feels amazing, relieves tension and decreases pain, improves your mood and range of motion, and zaps those headaches away, but I believe the real gift of massage is awareness.
You can have all the support in the world, but you have to decide you want to live a healthy, happy life. Keep this in mind as you make decisions today and for the rest of your days. It's your life to live!
